At Denbigh we recognise that the personal development of children, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally (SMSC), plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve.

At Denbigh, we aim to deliver an education that provides pupils with opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs. This includes spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures.

Our Aims

• To ensure that everyone connected with the school is aware of our values and principles.
• To ensure a consistent approach to the delivery of SMSC issues through the curriculum and the general life of the school.
• To ensure that a pupil’s education is set within a context that is meaningful and appropriate to their age, aptitude and background.
• To ensure that pupils know what is expected of them and why.
• To give each pupil a range of opportunities to reflect upon and discuss their beliefs, feelings and responses to personal experience.
• To enable pupils to develop an understanding of their individual and group identity.
• To enable pupils to begin to develop an understanding of their social and cultural environment and an appreciation of the many cultures that now enrich our society.
• To give each pupil the opportunity to explore social and moral issues, and develop a sense of social and moral responsibility.

Spiritual

Our children demonstrate their Spiritual Development through;

• Their ability and willingness to be reflective about their beliefs (religious or otherwise) that shape their perspective on life and their interest/respect for people who have different faiths, values and feelings to their own.
• Their enthusiasm, enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves and others around the world.
• Their use of imagination and creativity in their learning.

Moral

Our children demonstrate their Moral Development through;

• Their ability to recognise right from wrong and to behaviour in accordance with our school values and ethos.
• Their ability to understand the consequences of their behaviour and actions.
• Their ability to express and explain their views about moral and ethical issues and their ability to appreciate alternative views in such issues.

Social

Our children demonstrate their Social Development through;

• Their ability to use a range of social skills in different settings including social interactions with people from different backgrounds.
• Their ability to become involved with a variety of different groups and social settings including volunteering.
• Their ability to resolve conflict effectively.
• Their understanding and effective application of our School Values and British Values which the school upholds.

Cultural

Our children demonstrate their Cultural Development through;

• Their ability to appreciate the wide range of cultures throughout the world.
• Their ability to appreciate the wide range of cultures within our school and local community.
• Their ability to participate positively in cultural opportunities including learning about art, food technology, music and sports from around the world.
• Their ability to engage and demonstrate respect for people from different cultures on trips or through school visitors.
