Reception had very special visitors last Thursday as part of their topic Hibernation/animals. Rob from Zoolab brought some friends for the children to meet, the children were surprised to see that they weren't humans but animals of all sorts, from spiders to snakes and cockroaches to rats. The children were extremely brave with some willingly holding and stroking some of the creepiest of creatures. #dcpseyfs #dcpsladybird #dcpsbutterfly

A huge thank you for all the parents who came into nursery for the 'Learn with me' sessions yesterday. The theme was The Gruffalo. We had lots of fun making marks in our owl ice cream (shaving foam), practiced our counting skills as we rolled a dice and counted the same amount of scoops in our Gruffalo crumble (cereal) and picked up some scrambled snake (spaghetti) with tweezers. The children loved showing off all their fantastic learning in their file and on the walls. A huge well done and congratulations to the Year 5 children who performed Romeo and Juliet at the Northern Stage Theatre on Friday night. After a long day of technical and dress rehearsals, we took to the stage for our performance. The children were outstanding and gave a wonderful performance which was commented on by many of the audience members and other schools. I am so proud of the passion and commitment each child has shown since rehearsals began many months ago!

Thank you to all of the adults who came along to see us in the spotlight!

Today in Reception there was a real buzz in the Potion Lab, not least because one of the children created a potion that created flying things! We had to plan which ingredients we needed to perfect our potions, right down to the exact number. We wrote them down so we didnโ€™t forget, then read the recipes back in the creation zone. We had to follow our potion recipes exactly so our magic didnโ€™t go wrong! You would not believe what we made happen... ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐Ÿ›ซ

Year 2 Dinos have been exploring everyday materials this week and what they are used for depending on their properties. We investigated which material would be best to use as a roof for a house, coming to the conclusion that something strong and waterproof would be ideal. Today we looked at recycling and which materials can be recycled into something new. Ask us about where plastic comes from and how it is recycled at a factory.

Year 1 Pandas have had a fantastic STEM week learning all about ourselves. We have been labelling body parts and identifying living and non-living objects. We used our senses to investigate jelly. We know that animals include humans and have been learning about the life cycles of some animals. Well done Pandas. A super STEM week. Miss Linden #dcpspanda #dcpsstem #dcpslotc

OPAL PLAY UPDATE: Look at our new AMAZING areas for break times and lunch times for the children at Denbigh School. We have a giant pirate beach with secret jewels, gems and pirate treasure. We have a magical secret garden with CD's, wind chimes and small world. We have a messy mud kitchen with water and pots and pans. We also have a KS2 chill out zone with giant beanbags and a swinging hammock. The children will tell you how great play is and we STILL have so much more to come. Stay tuned! #dcpsopalplay

Year 2 Dinos explored bacteria and the importance of keeping ourselves clean this morning. We got all sparkly using glitter to represent germs and looked at how easily it was for bacteria to spread. Afterwards we investigated the best way to clean those germs off. Now they know, there are no excuses for not using soap and warm water.

The Dinosaurs experienced life as a caged hen today whilst learning about the life cycle of a chicken. As you can see by their faces they weren't very keen on being cooped up with very little space and no room to move. They were much happier being free range hens with plenty of space to move around in.

Year 3 have had a fantastic start to STEM week. We have been looking at forces, magnets and springs. We have had a few jam packed days where we have turned into scientists and carried out some very important scientific investigations. We have investigated pushes and pulls, tested the strength of magnets, looked at magnetic and non magnetic materials and tested how the strength of a push effects how far an object moves. Phew! It's very busy work. We even recorded our results in some very fancy bar charts and tables. We also made some very clever predictions and assessed to see if we were right. Watch out Stephen Hawking, our super lizards are super scientists! #dcpslizards #dcpsyear3 #dcpsstem #dcpslotc

Some of Year 5 went to the Northern Stage Theatre today for their Shakespeare Schools Festival workshop. We took to the stage to act out one of our scenes from Romeo and Juliet, tried different ways of using expression in our voices and learned some top tips of acting. We can't wait to try these out in rehearsals!

Tickets are on sale for the performance on 10th Nov. Please send any forms and money directly to Miss Smith.

The Dinos had an amazing day exploring seasonal change at Northumberland Park. We looked at signs that Autumn is here making sticky pictures using all the different colours of leaves which had fallen from the trees. Following that we honed our map reading skills with a spot of orienteering and tried to identify some of the many leaves around us. We then created our own maps using some landmarks found in the park, finishing up our day with some Andy Goldsworthy inspired art using only the natural objects we could find.

The Dinos reenacted parts of the great fire of Gateshead and Newcastle. We imagined we were the crowd watching the fire burning through the cloth factory and the warehouse from across the river. The final explosion gave us a shock!
At Bessie Surtee's house we transformed into buildings which caught fire following the explosion which sent debris across the river. Thankfully some buildings survived!

No Pens Day saw the year 2 Dinosaurs head outside for their maths lesson. We were using place value counters and dienes to add two 2 digit numbers. It was quite tricky as we had to exchange ten ones for a ten to work out the answers. The best bit was using the iPads to take photographs of what we were doing and then using the pictures to explain what we had done.
Ask the children to explain what they had to do tonight. Mrs Candlish

Year 2 Dinos have been putting some actions to our class text Nat Fantastic to help us remember the events which took place. It took quite a while but this is a really good first attempt at such a long story. Mrs Candlish
