Year 2 Dragons had a wonderful day at The Centre For Life. We had astronaut training, followed by a tour of our solar system in the planetarium, followed by a spectacular science show in the theatre and finished it all off exercising our brains in the brain and curiosity zones! A great day and outstanding behaviour from the children. Well done! #dcpsdragon

A lovely sunny ‘woodensday’ for the reception children this week. Lots of new things growing to explore, so many bugs and mini-beasts. Most interestingly the morning group found an owl pellet*. Some of our children thoroughly enjoyed talking about the things that owls like to eat!
In the afternoon we found a worm in need of rescue, and the boys and girls were very focussed on trying the help this worm in distress!

Anyone who mistakenly thought owl pellets might be food to leave out for hungry passing owls is not alone...

On this very warm April day the Reception children joined the rest of school celebrating the #dailymile . Some of us walked (mostly staff), some of us ran, some of us got distracted by daisies while taking a short cut across the middle of the field, but we did it. We were out for fifteen minutes and did just under 2,000 steps on average. We are sporting heroes. The children did quite well too...😀 Well done #dcpsladybird #dcpsbutterfly #dcpseyfs #dcpspe

Tomorrow the children from Reception to Year 6 will be taking part in ‘The Daily Mile’. The children can run, jog or walk if they need to for 15 minutes or until they complete the mile course.

The idea of the daily mile is to improve the physical, social and emotional health of children. Please ensure children have their P.E kits in school tomorrow.

Thank you for your support. Mr Holt.

The Dinos have been in the throes of kite making this week. They have explored where kites originated, what they were traditionally used for and looked at all the different types there are. Across the week they have designed and made Guatemalan kites, a carp kite and a diamond kite. Each one used different techniques and required a different set of skills. We even braved the hand saws for making the kite frame for our diamond kites - all digits remained in tact.
The finished products looked amazing and the children loved trying them out. Fantastic work Dinos 👍🏻

The woods visits today were certainly very different weather wise! We had sunshine and crisp air this morning, then rain and damp this afternoon. The children had an amazing day, it was one of two of the most focussed sessions we have had this year. The children are really comfortable in the environment and are noticing things they hadn’t before and looking for changes in the things they notice every visit. Today some children had the chance to use tools to trim some exceptionally long branches and twigs to make them suit what we wanted to play with a little better, we explored holes and made predications about what lived there. We compared ‘naked’ trees with ones with leaves and thought about what we might see after the holidays. We measured leaves and collected some to take back to school to make pictures and share with our grown ups. We also found a snail this afternoon. The snail was hidden in tree roots but the children were desperate to explore it. They carried it carefully to a wetter area, examined it closely, Collected food for it, washed it, talked to it and showed genuine care and interest. Obviously it was a very sleepy slug (or maybe a little shy) as it was happy to wriggle in its shell but it didn’t want to say hello. The children loved this today, so as the weather gets nicer (🤞) encourage them to explore the minibeasts in the garden.
Here is a link to some snail facts you can share with the boys and girls, or read first and pretend you are a snail expert!

We had an amazing time in the woods today, climbing, exploring, bug hunting and some of us got to explore the burn! Also we had a pretty amazing find. We were hunting for minibeasts under logs and we found something pretty unusual. It looked like a fungus but it moved! The children were very brave as they explored it, trying to work out if it was actually alive. It was curled up on a leaf so we had a good look with a magnifying glass. (Obviously I hid behind my iPad taking photos and asking questions). After a while we couldn’t work out what it was so we asked Zoe and Cath. They weren’t totally sure so said they would get back to us after lunch. It turns out we found Newzealand Flatworms, which are a rather revolting type of worm! We are going to find out a bit more about these before we go back to the woods as apparently they like to eat the earth worms we like to dig for! #denbighexplorers #dcpseyfs #dcpsladybird #dcpsbutterfly #dcpslotc #dcpsstem

Treasure theft update.
We found a picture of our classrooms that had a big X on it, right where we had kept our treasure. We think the pirate used it to find the treasure. Some of our astute detectives spotted finger prints on the back of the photos. We have been learning all about finger prints and examining our own in our attempts to track down the pesky pirate. Continuing on our mission to think like pirates we have also been reading and following instructions to make pirate hats. (Not black ones obviously as everyone knows only professional pirates are allowed to wear black hats). We’ve also been making our own parrots as all pirates have parrots to help them keep look out! Later in the week we are going to write messages to the pirate to demand our treasure back. Have a think at home of ways we could get the letters to the pirate! #dcpsbutterfly #dcpsladybird #dcpseyfs

Missing treasure update:
Pesky Pirate still has it! All our extensive searches have found are a discarded eye patch and scattered gems he must have dropped on his escape. Grown ups, can you help the boys and girls think of different ways we could get it back! Children can draw plans to make traps, write letters etc, share ideas. Boys and girls we have got to think like pirates!

What couldn’t believe our eyes in Reception this morning. We had accidentally left lots of treasure out in our pirate den and this morning it had all disappeared! We checked the security cameras and found that a pesky pirate had popped in over night and stolen our treasure! We were obviously shocked by this and have spent the morning making wanted posters and looking for clues. So far we know he has a curly moustache, a hat, and eye patch and ALL OF OUR TREASURE! Over the next couple of weeks we will be working to get our treasure back!

Due to the continued challenging weather conditions, and difficult access into the surrounding area of the school, we will be CLOSED tomorrow (Friday 2nd March). As always, we do not make these decisions lightly but must ensure our children, families and staff team are safe.
World Book Day will go ahead next Thursday 8th March. We will rearrange the Reception, Year 4 and Year 5 parents consultations for next week.
Thank you all for your continued support and patience.
Homework for tomorrow and across the weekend:
1. Build another snowman
2. Have a snowball fight
3. Drink hot chocolate
4. Watch a snow related DVD
5. Snuggle up and stay warm

The children had such fun in the snow this week at forest school. We explored the woods looking for the first signs of spring as we saw the flowers starting to grow and could hear the birds singing in the forest. We even noticed footprints in the snow belonging to the birds and rabbits and followed our friends footprints to find them.We loved running in the snow and rolling down the hill as well as making snow angels, snowmen and snow bugs. We practising our hand-eye coordination as we threw snowballs at a target on the wall and even did some painting in the snow.
