Year 2 Dinos have been exploring everyday materials this week and what they are used for depending on their properties. We investigated which material would be best to use as a roof for a house, coming to the conclusion that something strong and waterproof would be ideal. Today we looked at recycling and which materials can be recycled into something new. Ask us about where plastic comes from and how it is recycled at a factory.

Year 2 Dinos explored bacteria and the importance of keeping ourselves clean this morning. We got all sparkly using glitter to represent germs and looked at how easily it was for bacteria to spread. Afterwards we investigated the best way to clean those germs off. Now they know, there are no excuses for not using soap and warm water.

The Dinosaurs experienced life as a caged hen today whilst learning about the life cycle of a chicken. As you can see by their faces they weren't very keen on being cooped up with very little space and no room to move. They were much happier being free range hens with plenty of space to move around in.

The Dinos had an amazing day exploring seasonal change at Northumberland Park. We looked at signs that Autumn is here making sticky pictures using all the different colours of leaves which had fallen from the trees. Following that we honed our map reading skills with a spot of orienteering and tried to identify some of the many leaves around us. We then created our own maps using some landmarks found in the park, finishing up our day with some Andy Goldsworthy inspired art using only the natural objects we could find.
The children were outstanding all day long. I couldn't be prouder. #dcpsdinosaurs #dcpslotc

Reminder that year 2 have their trip to Northumberland Park tomorrow (Tuesday 17th October). Children will need a packed lunch, waterproof coat, school jumper and warm jeans/leggings/jogging bottoms. They can also wear wellies or trainers given that it is likely to be muddy. No ballet pumps or heels please. Thanks. Mrs Candlish

Year 2 Dinos took their maths lesson outside this week to link what we do in lessons to real life. We have been working on different methods to add two numbers together so we thought a game where we have to add up our score would make it really meaningful. We got highly competitive trying to get the highest score.

The Dinos reenacted parts of the great fire of Gateshead and Newcastle. We imagined we were the crowd watching the fire burning through the cloth factory and the warehouse from across the river. The final explosion gave us a shock!
At Bessie Surtee's house we transformed into buildings which caught fire following the explosion which sent debris across the river. Thankfully some buildings survived!

Year 2 Dinos had a fantastic day yesterday visiting the Baltic and the site of the great fire of Gateshead and Newcastle. At the Baltic we explored the bridges which cross the River Tyne, learning their names and then inventing our own.
During our tour we stood at the very place the great fire began 163 years ago. We learned all about how the fire spread so quickly and what the firemen had to do to stop it from destroying the whole town. The children were amazing.

No Pens Day saw the year 2 Dinosaurs head outside for their maths lesson. We were using place value counters and dienes to add two 2 digit numbers. It was quite tricky as we had to exchange ten ones for a ten to work out the answers. The best bit was using the iPads to take photographs of what we were doing and then using the pictures to explain what we had done.
Ask the children to explain what they had to do tonight. Mrs Candlish

Year 2 Dinos have been putting some actions to our class text Nat Fantastic to help us remember the events which took place. It took quite a while but this is a really good first attempt at such a long story. Mrs Candlish
