Year 2 visit the Synagogue
In RE lessons, Year 2 has been learning about Judaism. We have looked at what is inside a Synagogue, Jewish festivals such as Hannukah and why a Mezzuzah is outside each door.
Our topic culminated with a trip to the synagogue in Gosforth. Here we went inside the synagogue and saw where the services take place. We saw where the Rabi stood when he led the service and where the ladies sat upstairs, while the men sat downstairs. The boys wore a kippuh on their heads, as the boys needed their heads covered at all times.
We looked at a Torah scroll and learnt that it takes a year to write one, and if any mistakes were made, that section of the Torah needed to be started again. We looked at a book, written in Hebrew, and how each line is written from right to left, the opposite to us.
