Year 2 go in search of creepy crawlies!

During this half term’s STEM week, Year 2 have been learning lots about Minibeasts.

The week ended, on Friday 7th June, with a visit to the Rising Sun Country Park. Here Year 2 embarked on a day of Minibeast hunting and pond dipping.
The children went into the woods to look for Minibeasts. They found that Minibeasts like to hide from Year 2 children, so they had to look really carefully for them! They tended to be found in dark, damp places such as under rocks, trees and leaves. We found a large collection of different creatures such as spiders, slugs, worms, centipedes, snails, ants and woodlice. A huge range considering it had been such nice weather all week!

The second task the children enjoyed was pond dipping. The children learnt how to use the nets correctly to catch the pond creatures and then use an identification sheet to name them. We made sure that we released the creatures back into the pond so not to disturb their habitat.
